The Bay of the Turks, located near Otranto in Puglia, is famous for its natural beauty and for being a paradise of uncontaminated beaches with white sand and crystalline waters. Its curious name is due to an ancient legend which says that, right here on this beach, as far back as the 15th Century, the Turks landed during the siege of Otranto. Today, the Bay is part of a protected area, much loved for its tranquillity and the breathtaking landscape, attracting many tourists looking for wild nature and a clear sea.

The Bay of the Turks beach appears in all the tourist guides for Puglia, and once you get there, it’s easy to see why. This enchanting beach has been awarded a Blue Flag and ‘5 Sails’ from the Legambiente Environmentalist Association, due to its enchanting nature and its crystalline water. The Bay is made up of coves of sand spaced out by low rocks, protected by cliffs rich in vegetation. Despite the wild atmosphere, there is a fully-equipped bathing facility, providing all sorts of mod cons (in July and August, we advise you to reserve a beach umbrella at Bay of the Turks beach, as space is limited).
How to get to Bay of the Turks: useful advice
Let’s move on to the more practical part: where is Bay of the Turks? This natural paradise rises along the Adriatic coast in the Salento region, about 8 km north of Otranto, in the province of Lecce. You can reach the Bay from Lecce in various ways, as you prefer. Take a bus from Lecce or drive: the trip involves 50 kilometres state road, in the direction of Otranto.
Where to park for the Bay of the Turks
As for parking at the Bay of the Turks, around the beach there are several paid car parks. However, considering it is so popular in the summer months, we recommend you arrive early or considering using alternative transport means.
