Puglia: 5 ideal beaches for families with children
An ancient land made up of seaside towns and villages, long stretches of age-old olive trees and saline scents. Puglia is one of the most beautiful places in all of Italy, and a holiday is not enough to bring home the essence of this region so unique in its kind. It has various different features and characteristics unraveling within: from the spur at the heel of the Boot ending at Santa Maria di Leuca, passing through the splendid Salento. It is bathed by two seas, the Ionian and the Adriatic, which come together in the Strait of Otranto.
There are simply thousands of ways to organise a holiday here, but if you are travelling with the family, it is best to know about the most easily accessible and liveable places for certain needs. This, then, is where to bring the kids in Puglia, specifically, a list of the ideal beaches, with shallow waters and all the mod cons.
Porto Cesareo
Porto Cesareo is probably the most famous beach in the region and is perfect for a holiday in Puglia with the kids. The water is very shallow and crystalline, which brings to mind the Caribbean Sea. However, apart from May and June, it is always teeming with tourists from everywhere. The resorts are fully equipped and offer a whole range of services, making it an ideal beach for families.
Torre dell’Orso
The Strait of Otranto makes the water in Torre dell’Orso so clear it is the envy of even the most respected resorts worldwide. The sand is silver-coated, and every year, Torre dell’Orso is named one of the best beaches for children in Salento. There is a whole range of resort facilities, offering the very best of Puglia’s culinary tradition: yet another reason to come here.
This beach is just a few kilometres from both VOI Alimini Resort and VOI Daniela Essentia, two of the handiest villages in Puglia for staying with the family, both facing the Salento Sea and surrounded by the fascinating Mediterranean scrub.
Marina di Pescoluse
Marina di Pescoluse is a beach known to most as “the Salento Maldives”, and it’s easy to see why. Just look at a photo, and you’ll see that it is one of the nicest seaside areas in all of Italy, not just the region. Where can you go to the sea in Puglia with the kids if you do not go to Marina di Pescoluse? It is simply the perfect place: the water is shallow, almost as if it were a reef, and so clean that it is awarded yearly as a “blue flag” beach.
La Baia dei Turchi
La Baia dei Turchi, a place where history tells us the Arab warriors landed in the 15th Century, is right beside Otranto, Italy’s most easterly town, and is definitely worth a visit. The beach here is unique in its kind and has a whole range of great facilities, but it still maintains a wild charm all of its own. Just think that to get there, you pass through a dense pine grove, which provides respite in the shade of Summer.
Like Torre dell’Orso, la Baia dei Turchi is also easily accessible from the resorts mentioned above—VOI Daniela Essentia and VOI Alimini Resort.
Marina di Pulsano
Marina di Pulsano is one of the most loved beaches in Ionian Salento. The sand is golden in colour and the water is a guarantee of transparency and purity. It is right in the heart of the Gulf of Taranto and stretches for eight kilometres. This long stretch of sand has many facilities which make here perfect for a holiday in Puglia with the children. And don’t underestimate the fact that even in the heart of the Summer, this breach is busy but now crowded like other seaside locations.
