South Sardinia: the places not to be missed
Less acclaimed than the northern part, South Sardinia is a wonderful place to organise your summer holidays. It is teeming with lovely little islands, some hardly known, all well worth a trip. There are also so many beaches of very fine sand and turquoise water that you won’t be able to visit them all on one holiday.
Here, then, is a brief guide on what to visit in South Sardinia.
Villasimius: the most famous beaches
The most beautiful part of South Sardinia is, without a shadow of a doubt, Villasimius, with its splendid beaches and breathtaking panoramas.
One of the most loved beaches is definitely “Spiaggia del Riso [Rice Beach]” - its name is due to its grains of granite quartz sand, which are tiny and polished by the sea. Nor can you miss out on Campulongu with its Caribbean atmosphere, due to the crystalline water and surrounding dense vegetation.
Visiting Sant’Antioco
If you plan to spend your holidays in peace and quiet, Sant’Antioco is the place for you. It’s one of the most beautiful places in South Sardinia, an island within an island, where peace and quiet and the slow life reign, the life brought forward by the local fishermen. The coves and beaches here are pure poetry, as is the lagoon area rising up in the area of the sand isthmus connecting Sant’Antioco to the region, inhabited by flamingos and red herons.
Swimming in Porto Sa Ruxi
Within the protected Capo Carbonara area, we have Porto Sa Ruxi, an amazingly pretty bay. Its sandy dunes and triumphant Mediterranean scrub create an almost tropical atmosphere.
The experience of diving into transparent, turquoise-coloured water, a distinctive trait in this region, and laying back in the sun on fine golden sand ensures lovely moments of relaxation and connection with nature.
Stop off in Porto Giunco
Also in the Capo Carbonara area, we find another idyllic beach: Porto Giunco. This is the ideal beach for lovers of snorkelling and diving, thanks to the variety of marine flora and fauna in the sea here. Another special feature is that Porto Giunco is shaped as a strip of very fine sand separating the Mediterranean Sea from Stagno di Notteri, a curious humid environment which is a natural habitat for flamingos and other marsh birds: a real paradise for lovers of birdwatching.
Carloforte: an ancient town on an island
There is another island in South Sardinia offering both an enchanting sea and a whole load of history. It’s Isola di San Pietro [St. Peter’s Island], known to few but well worth a visit if you have the time. Here there is an ancient charming town: Carloforte, named in honour of King Carlo Emanuele III of Savoia, the sovereign who allowed the place to be colonised.
Where to stay in South Sardinia
This part of the region is full of places to visit and magnificent beaches, concentrated mainly in the Villasimius area. Just a stone’s throw away we have the VOI Tanka Village, a comfortable facility facing a splendid stretch of coastline, with fine clear sand made up of little quartz grains. As well as the sea, the village offers many activities, shows and a wellness area for guaranteeing hours of pure relaxation.
The VOI Tanka Village is one of the resorts on the sea in Sardinia most loved by families, as is the VOI Colonna Village, located in the north of the island, in the Golfo Aranci area.
